Happy December everyone. Welcome to the long, cold, seemingly endless days of hiatus. Looking for some fannish way to fill some time? Think short.Inspired by this Times of London twitfic competition (and probably too many hours on Twitter) I thought it might be interesting to try a challenge in microfic writing. So I present the TwitFanFic challenge. The rules (such as they are) are few. So are the characters available in this challenge: 140. This is about condensing a moment, an emotion, a story in a few words -- boiling it all down. See what you can do with the 140 character limit that Twitter imposes. There are no winners or losers. This is just for fun.About that 140 character limit. Twitter's count includes punctuation and spaces. You can shoot for that strict interpretation, or play it loose. (I'm certainly not going to be counting everyone's TwitFanFics.)This challenge is open to one and all. Feel free to link or pimp, if you want. Just post your TwitFanFic in the comments here (or link to your LJ, if you prefer). One example from the Times' contest of a TwitFic to whet your appetite: Tried to write a story with 140 characters. I only had two. Pete and Antonio. It was a hell of a tale. Long story short, Pete did it
So The Times of London co-sponsored a 140-character fiction writing competition (see winners here) which got me to wondering if there would be interest is challenging ourselves to write similar length fanfic.Don't write it just yet. For now I'm just gauging interest, and whether we should try to link via Twitter some way or just do it all here. I thought it might be something fun to do once we enter the black hole that is the gap between episodes #10 and #11 that begins later this month. We've done drabble challenges and flashfic challenges in the past (and some folks have come up with great 6 word entries as well).Interest? Thoughts?Oh, and here's the winning entry from that contest:sundancep: Tenderly he slipped the ring on her finger, “Grow old with me, my love”. She agreed, not knowing he meant right away.
Hello everyone, and a happy early Halloween!Just to let you know, the Housefic_Meta Library list of fic recs has been updated with this summer's run of fic discussions. Here's the link. Please let me know if there are any dead links or typos or anything that needs to be fixed. We're up to 84 fics in the Library now. Thanks to all for participating and congrats to the authors. It's nice to see a cross-section of fic writers, styles, ships, story lengths and characters represented. I may try to have a short series of nomination discussions during the next show break, but it depends on RL realities at this point. I'll let you know. I'm trying to arrange some non-Library discussions/interviews as well. One request, if someone out there has time and better LJ-Fu than me (which wouldn't take much) I'd appreciate some help cleaning up some items around here. Like changing the link name for the Library from the old Hall of Fame link name. Thanks again, everyone.
Ever wish to try out something completely different from your usual writing style but wary of changing things up? Playing around as a writer can be both liberating and frustrating. Here's an excuse to do so, no strings attached.Posting this here with permission from karaokegal, who has hosted a "Come As You're Not" fanfic party the past few years. Please note, this is not a challenge, not a requirement, nothing but a party. The idea is to give yourself permission to do something different -- to "come in costume" as it were. Known for fluff? How about angst? You usually write long fics? What about something short? Never write smut? Here's a chance. Remember. The idea is to have fun.The "Come As You're Not" party is open to multiple fandoms, so if your costume is to try writing in a new fandom, that's great too.Find out more here from Karaokegal.

Final vote of this round of Library discussions. Thanks for everyone taking part throughout these past few months. Voting on "Eden Sank To Grief" is now closed. It was voted into the Library.
Does "In Transit" belong in the Housefic Meta Library?
crack_van is a cross-fandom fanfic rec community looking to add more full-time fandoms to its rec roster. House used to be on its full-fandom rotation but got demoted to featured fandom status last year because no one was volunteering to rec.How it works: you volunteer to rec for one month. The month you're assigned, you make a specific number of fic recs in your fandom: at least 1 per week, up to 12 recs in the month. Further details are here. To obtain full-time status we would need at least 12 reccers lined up (enough for a year).Let's try to get House back onto the full-time roster! We're as big as some of the full-time fandoms already there. Go here to comment.
Today is National Punctuation Day. No, really. Let's consider this an international celebration though, shall we?Feel free to mark the day here by either providing examples on the wonderful use of, or abuse of, a favorite bit of punctuation. Or, in the alternative, praising your favorite punctuation. What will it be? The semicolon? The parenthetical phrase? Or perhaps you're like me and are driven to capslock over how some writers NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT PUNCTUATION BELONGS AT THE END OF EVERY SENTENCE! YES, THAT ONE TOO!
Hey there everyone. Final fic discussion for this round of Library discussions. I hope you all have found some interesting fics and interesting discussions along the way. As Whitney once said, "Crack is whack." Right? Or is it? In Ireland, crack (or craic) is the best fun, in the best ways. So something out of the ordinary to consider in this week's nomination. Two more fics will be coming up in this round of nominations. Next week is "Eden Sank To Grief," by shutterbug_12 then we wrap up with "In Transit" by lightlikewater.Title: Teddy House (Link is to first chapter, other links from there.)Author: alex51324Summary: Let's just say ... Does "Decameron" belong in the Housefic Meta Library?
Making our way through our nominated fics, this one brings us an angle on the sense of an unreliable narrator. It's ten parts in all. We've got five more fics left in this current grouping of nominations, which will take us through to the start of Season Six. For the schedule, check here.Title: Decameron (Link is to first chapter, with additional chapters linked from there.)Author: nakannaleeSummary: Cameron/House one-sided with House/Wilson as pairings. From the author's note: This is what happens when I'm in the middle of a Gothic novel and a course on the Renaissance. The title--as well as the basic layout--are borrowed from Boccaccio, a 14th century writer. Um, trust me, it's not as haughty as it sounds.( Read more...Collapse )
